We are Salt & Brine
We are Salt & Brine.
Welcome to our site.
We want to share our passion for travelling Canada and the world. Let this site serve as a beacon for similarly mad-minded adventurers.
Like Jack Kerouac said: "The only ones for me are the mad ones."
We hope we've found a mad one in you.
We've seen a little of the world...
...but we aren't done yet.
We've wandered Bermuda's crystal beaches and Montreal's cobbled streets.
We've explored South America's jungles and Boston's pubs.
We've sailed the pride of Nova Scotia and until recently called Halifax home.
We are proud East-coasters and hopeless wanderers.
Currently, we find ourselves in windswept, fiddle-manic St. John's.
We're having a time.
For now, we'll be writing about our experiences in the beautiful province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
We don't know how long we'll be here but we'll enjoy the ride while it lasts.
I think Alan Doyle said it best: "I don't know where I'm going/ but I know where I belong."
Here's a little about ourselves.
Meet Josh, the writer
I'm the handsome fella at the top of the page!
My family is originally from, and I quote: "the Crossroads of the World."
That would be Gander, Newfoundland, in case you were wondering. To answer your question, yes, the town decided its motto long, long ago. The town does boast two Tim's so there's that.
As a result of my Dad's job, I've moved around a lot and have called nearly every province in Canada home at one time or another. My nomadic upbringing has taught me one thing: I love this country with everything I've got.
I've learned a lot during my travels. I'm fiercely bilingual, a consummate worker and believer in the power of words.
I had the crazy idea last summer to become a sailor and joined Bluenose II. Something to write about.
Well, as luck would have it, I met my amazing partner Jessica on the ship and the rest is history.
I have just gotten my second degree and am interning as a journalist for the St. John's Telegram. I want this site to be a creative outlet.
A final fun fact; "Fireworks" by the Tragically Hip is my favourite song.
Meet Jess, the photographer
"Do or do not; there is no try." Yoda. Perhaps a family motto.
That's how I'd sum myself up in a single sentence. I'm a big believer in action and following your dreams.
I come from a family that follows their dreams.
My father, is a professional sailor and hasn't worked a day in his life. That's because he's found his passion. My mother is continually crafting things out of wood and tile and inspiring me to keep up with my art.
I'm still searching for my passion.
Although I was born in Connecticut, I've lived over half of my life in Nova Scotia. It's here that I've learned my salty, sailing ways. Grade school in Lunenburg, and then University in Halifax. East coast to my core.
I graduated last year with a degree in geology from Dalhousie and have spent the past months wandering South America, Canada and the United States. There have been a few hikes...
Right now, I live in St. John's with Josh and together we're planning our next series of adventures.
I've been documenting my travels with my camera and have really come to appreciate the power of the lens.
I hope to share my journey with you.
